Peace in the Middle East

Recently a compromise peace accord was signed. Israel and Palestine had remained locked in a summit for nine days before reaching an agreement. Both sides have declared that they will not go back to violence, something that is never certain in that part of the world.

Will the peace deal work? The two countries have been compelled to shun violence and resort to peace. The United States has been almost threatening in bringing the two sides together. The peace talks have been negotiated and managed by the United States. How will two countries ever reach peace if almost everything is done by another factor? The only true way to achieve peace is to get the two leaders to sit down voluntarily and discuss the problem. Telling them to talk is hardly ever the solution. If this peace process was a broken vase, it has been glued together. One hopes that the glue holds forever and the vase does not break again. This constitutes a sound temporary agreement, but not a permanent one.

These two areas have been in turmoil since the formation of Israel. Countries backed the formation of Israel taking away a part of Palestine. Palestinians revolted arguing the taking of their homeland. They attacked Israel with the aid of other Arab countries. Israelis defended their newly formed nation successfully. In the process, they also enlarged their territory. Since then there has been great friction between the two countries. Palestinian groups have sworn war against the Israelis. The land and security, thus, became a big issue at the summit. Why was the peace so important to the United States in the first place?

You can look at this situation in any angle you prefer, but it will effect the United States, and the rest of the world for that matter. A war, or even unrest, could affect the world’s economies. Investors will get queasy about investing in companies that supply a major amount of their goods to the Middle East. Another factor that will be affected if there was a dispute would be the world’s oil supply. The world is heavily dependent on that small area of the world for oil. Oil prices will rise instantaneously, adding an additional load to many people’s pocket. The start of a war there will undoubtedly draw U.S. attention. The U.S. will have very little choice but to stand by one side and abandon the other.

No one knows how long this accord will stand. There was an agreement signed in the year 1993, and there is one now. Let us pray to Gods of all religion for His blessings to be bestowed upon the Middle East and for the people of that region to enjoy a peaceful life.
