NATO ATTACKS; ARE THEY JUSTIFIED? It has been on every newscast in the country and around the world. Every station paints the picture a little differently, but the fact of the story remains the same. The killing of innocent ethnic Albanians has been happening for a long time now. In October, there was a treaty that stopped the killing, but that was only for a short period. The steady exodus of ethnic Albanians from Kosovo has continued. What Milosevic has done and is continuing to do is wrong. There is no opposing this simple fact. The slaying of innocent civilians is immoral. Some people say whatever was happening was within the borders of Kosovo and NATO had no business to interfere. Saying this is like saying because you killed a man in your house, your neighbor has no right to act. President Clinton has mentioned in his addresses to the nation concerning the operation that these horrifying events must be stopped. He said that this was because these were going to be the events that would personify the 21st century. The symbolic impact of this is extremely grave. This century began with the Germans triggering World War I in this very country, and now the century ends with horrifying events happening in the same country. What a way this is for the 20th century to wave goodbye. The attack on the ethnic Albanians by Milosevic are paves the way for more heinous events, and must be stopped before they inflict any more damage than they have already inflicted. Even through all of these strikes, Mr. Milosevic, is continuing to attack and burn villages that house ethnic Albanians. Mr. Milosevic had signed a pact last year that he has violated in a very short time. Now, he again is saying that he is willing to hammer out a deal, if NATO pulls out all of its troops in Macedonia. He is like the boy who cried wolf to the townspeople one too many times. He had signed a cease-fire in October, which he had violated by January. He had agreed to pull all of his troops out of Kosovo in October of 1998. They are now ravaging the lives of Kosovars again. Milosevic will not stop for any reason. If the leader of a country violates a cease-fire once, there is nothing to say that he will not do it again. I would not be surprised if he was one of the best poker players in the world. The way he bluffs, he could beat the best. None of the refugees that are leaving Kosovo now might return in fear of the tragic events that caused them to flee. The implications of all these events scare me. They seem to show how animosity and hatred have taken over our lives. The feeling and need for supremacy has corrupted us to our hearts. We do not now even blink at attacks, by either side; we have seen and witnessed an age of violence. The generation of today is growing up in an age like this. The future that awaits them will be tainted with bits and pieces of these events. These events of animosity by Milosevic will not hinder them, hopefully, from building a great future, free of all violence. Date posted: April 04, 1999. What do you think
