Why do we care about the future?

Have you ever heard an advertising agency call a product the "wave of the future?" What lies ahead in our lives has always intrigued us. We have forever had a yearning for the knowledge and possibilities that lay ahead. Imagine yourself, if you will, in a world that has no concern about the future. This task is impossible to do as every moment of the day we are thinking about something that we can improve or reduce.

Looking ahead to the future is always a soothing experience. We see the future as something beautiful not influenced by what anyone else says. In the past during Vietnam or WWII, the future, no matter what, was a perfect land without any flaws. The calm and comfort that we feel when we look ahead to the future is the feeling a baby has when it is taken into its mother’s arms.

The future also offers an oasis in the harsh desert of reality. A mirage, as some hopes for the future are, is still an inspiration to carry on to find a similar place. The desire to look into the future itself suggests an urge to realize your dreams. If you take into consideration the dreams of the world, you will run into issues like ending poverty and war. However, if you look at an individual dream you will see a picture of satisfaction. We spend all our lives trying to impress family, friends, and anyone we meet. A metaphorical meter stick measures all of our lives. We spend our lives trying to live up to the dreams of others. To us we must always satisfy our parents, always look "cool" to our friends and always make an extremely good impression. We can almost never do that. However, we strive to achieve an eternal dream that we have. If we ever leave a false first impression on a person we always say, "Oh, I’ll make amends in the…" Fill in the blank and you shall understand what I am saying.

If I was to ask the reader "Where do you see yourself in the future?", what would you say? The response I would expect is a quick shrug of the shoulders and the dismissing phrase of "I dunno." A peculiar thing I notice is that although everyone has dreams and hopes for the future, they shy away from sharing them with other people. Commenting on dreams is often unimaginable to many of us. When we are asked the question the picture of all we hope to be flashes before us, but we cannot translate this beautiful picture into words. We lose all communication at that very point and all we can say is "I dunno."

To me, this personifies dreams. Dreams are shy yet bold. They are meek yet strong. They barely utter a squeak, yet are the driving force behind all our actions. These dreams that we have are closely connected to the future as well. The future is land of eternal peace and beauty that cannot be described. You cannot describe the future to yourself either. If you have ever tried you shall only hear a stutter or two of unformed words.
