  1. During W.W.I, some soldiers in the trenches deliberately exposed their hands or their feet during heavy gunfire in hope of sustaining an injury that would gain them a discharge, avoiding the risk of death.
  2. The building was owned by the National Geological Society, although it was not originally designed for them. Over the years, the society's collection of rock specimens grew and the weight eventually caused the building to collapse.
  3. It is believed that this is an advantage because 17 is a prime number. If there was a large cicada population one year with a large population of predators, the next generation would not have a large generation of predators because their lifecycles would not be factors of 17.
  4. In 1945, Percy Le Baron Spencer, an engineer at Raytheon who was working on radar equipment, noticed that a candy in his pocket had been melted. He correctly deduced that this was because microwave radiations had agitated the molecules in the sweet. Following this discovery, Raytheon designed and patented the microwave.
  5. The man was participating in a kite flying contest and glued several pieces of glass to a string so that they would cut the strings of the competitor's kites. He won the contest but was later disqualified.
